A Travel Guide To Greece
Greece has been one of the top tourist destinations for many a year but what does it really offer ? What’s so great about Greece ? Well I guess the first thing that comes to mind is the mythology (plenty of that) and of course the ancient culture (plenty of that too) but what really attracts the modern day traveller to Greece has to be the amazing scenery and beautiful coastlines. The islands the mountains and the nature on offer is second to none.
Going to Greece is like discovering a trove of wonderful treasures for there are a lot of must see attractions. The major cities in Greece are Athens, Santorini, Olympia, Crete, Mikonos, Corfu, Attica, Rhodes, Kos, Thessaloniki, Chania, Heraklion and Patras. All of them have something to offer, it’s just a matter of picking and choosing what’s best for you.
Syntagma Square
The capital of Greece, Athens is a haven full of attractive hot spots. One of the most visited attractions within Athens is Syntagma Square, otherwise known as the Constitution Square. It’s located at the east end of Ermou Street directly across the Greek Parliament.
The Acropolis
Another tourist destination which is considered to be one of the most recognized historical structures within Greece is the Acropolis. This so called “Sacred Rock” was built during the 5th Century BC with Pericles as the leader. The Acropolis holds many temples and monuments and the finest among all of them is the Parthenon, which was built to honor the greek goddess of war and wisdom, Athena.
Monastories Of Meteora
Another place to visit is the Monasteries of Meteora which were originally made up of twenty-four monasteries built on the sky-high rocks. These were built during the 15th century by the Greek monks and today only six monasteries remain.
National Archaeological Museum
Part of the must see tourist spots within Greece include the National Archaeological Museum. It’s the biggest museum with over 20,000 excavated exhibits from the country. This museum houses artifacts from the Prehistoric Collection whish was the basis of Neolithic, Mycenaean and Cycladic civilizations as well as the Sculptures collection, Metallurgy collection and many others.
The Olympics
The birthplace of the Olympics, the Olympia, is also one of Greece’s prides. The Olympia is situated in the Temple of Zeus. In 776 BC, athletic competitions were started in honor of the father of the gods Zeus and over the years became the much loved sports tournament – the Olympics. Other structures found within Olympia include the Stadium, the Hippodrome, the Prytaneion and the Gymansium.
Cretan Gorges
If you’re going to Greece you need to check out the Cretan Gorges. These magnificent gorges of Crete will take your breath away and the most famous among them is the Samaria Gorge for it’s the longest ravine in Europe. This breathtaking valley stretches to about 18 kilometers and boasts of unblemished natural beauty. The Minoan Palace in Crete is also a must see.
Ancient Mythology
Greece is the seat of ancient mythology! Their gods and goddesses can be seen everywhere in the form of huge structures built to honor these very Gods. Structures such as the Temple of Apollo Epicurius and Mount Athos were built in commemoration of the belief that Greece was the chosen place on earth where the gods and goddesses once touched. Other attractions include the Byzantine Museum, Ancient Thira, the Palace of Knossos and many others.
Greece indeed is a very beautiful country rich in ancient history and culture. Exploring it you’ll not only get an insight into the civilisation that once was but leave with memoirs to last you a lifetime.
